Meet Vlad Ayriyan!
Hello, my name is Vladimir (Vlad) Ayriyan. I was born in Armenia, then my family and I moved to San Diego, California, when I was three years old. I was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia back in 2002 when I was nine years old.
Going through my school years with this disease was very difficult. My body kept getting worse and continuously adjusting due to FA’s progression. I have been permanently wheelchair-bound for ten years.
I got my associate’s degree when I was 20-years-old. I wanted to further my education and pursue a bachelor’s degree, but fatigue got the best of me. I didn’t give up; I just needed to change my lifestyle. Now it’s all about keeping my body in shape, so exercise and eating right is my priority. I found Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) during this time.
FARA has changed my life! Connecting with the FA community gave me a greater purpose as an ambassador and a greater understanding of FA’s science because of all their work. After seeing their efforts, my family and I started a nonprofit organization called FAMovement.
FAMovement INC. originated in 2017. FAMovement’s goal is to spread awareness of Friedreich’s Ataxia in my way. I love FARA, but I just wanted to expand the attention, especially locally. Later on that year, I decided to make it official and file for a 501c3(tax-exempt) from the IRS. I haven’t been doing anything with it lately due to various reasons. But, check out the Instagram page to Meet Vlad Ayriyan see what FAMovement has been doing!
The year 2020 has been challenging for everyone. Still, besides the pandemic, I’ve been having problems with my heart since January, I had an ablation procedure on the left side of my heart, and during this, the doctors realized I need an ablation on the right side, too.
I have hope for the best future, and with generous support from my family and friends, anything is possible.
One Love, Joey and Vlad
