Meet Petey Dandini!

Hey, how are ya?!

My next guest blog post comes from one of my best friends since the first grade, Petey Dandini. Petey has faced and overcome many hardships in life, including his biggest struggle with his weight.

Despite everything, he has continued to work as hard as possible to lose weight and help others achieve happiness. His weight-loss journey has been inspiring to watch and makes me extremely proud to call him my friend. I believe that his journey will inspire you all as well, and it is my honor to introduce him to you now!

Meet Petey Dandini:

“If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.”

When Joey asked me to write a guest blog I was honored. Little does Joey know, he inspires me every single day and believe it or not, a simple question he asked me one night out in Boston may have changed my life forever. Before I get to that, I want to share with you my story and what got me to where I am today.

I had always been the big kid growing up despite playing sports all year round. I liked to think I was pretty good at sports but that never stopped me from being insecure about my weight. As a freshman in high school, I weighed about 250lbs and toward the beginning of my sophomore year, I injured my knee causing me to miss out on my sophomore year of football due to surgery. I ended up blowing up to 320lbs and during my yearly check-up with my doctor, she suggested that at 16 years old the best thing for me to do would be to consider getting a Gastric Bypass. Not knowing what that was at the time I asked my dad, “what the hell is she talking about?” After he told me I thought, “absolutely not! Enough is enough, I’m tired of being the fat kid” Immediately I got to work and about 9 months later I had lost 130 pounds.

However, that weight slowly came back, and before you know it I had gained it all back and some. In 2018, I had ballooned back up to 340lbs and the new doctor I had at the time uttered the two words I thought I would never hear again “Gastric Bypass”. There I was again, back to where I started. I was filled with so many emotions that day, I was sad, I was scared, and most of all I was pissed at myself for letting myself get this way. Instead of throwing in the towel, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to do it again, but the right way. I wanted people to Meet Peety Dandini!

I buckled down and started shedding some weight and then one night out, Joey casually popped the question. “Hey, you ever think about becoming a trainer?” I know, I know, it seems so simple, but until then I had never thought about it. I had always thought I needed to look the part to be a personal trainer. I was scared I couldn’t do it and no one would respect me if I was still overweight but Joey saw how passionate I was about fitness. He believed in me and that was enough to try and give it a shot.

Meet Petey Dandini

I am now a coach at Orangetheory Fitness, where my weight loss journey began. People were finally able to Meet Petey Dandini. There, I am always trying to inspire the hundreds of people, of all ages, that they too can accomplish anything they set their mind to and that it’s never too late to turn your life around. I pride myself on being the most empathetic coach I can be and try to treat people the way I want to be treated because I know what it’s like to be in their shoes. I try to lead by example because my goal in life is to be a role model. I don’t want to just live my life in this world, I want to build a better world with my life.

If there’s one piece of advice I could give with everything going on in the world, especially right now as I’m writing this, it would be to shift perspective. Try changing “have to” to “get to”. Just like Joey says, it’s about time and making it count. Every day is an opportunity, so let’s take it and make the most of it. Remember tough times don’t last, tough people, do. If you’re facing adversity you can either let it destroy you, or strengthen you, the choice is yours.

“If it doesn’t challenge you, it doesn’t change you.”

I hope that you enjoyed taking the time to Meet Petey Dandini! Follow him for more.

One Love, Joey and Petey

As Italians who grew up eating passionately, it is difficult to change that pattern. However, I have painfully managed to remain at a normal weight...give or take a few. I am proud of you and loved reading your story. We go way back but never forget the great people from days gone by. I live in Florida and people love Orangetheory. God bless you with success!!
